5 tips to start working out at home (even if you’re a total beginner)

Published on 27 July 2025 at 16:29

Let’s be honest - starting a new fitness routine can feel intimidating, especially if you’re doing it at home, on your OWN, with no game and no idea where to begin.

The good News? You don’t need a gym membership or fancy gym equipment to get results. You just need a simple plan, a little consistency, and a push in the right direction. So if you’re ready to finally start working out from home- and actually stick to it- these 5 tips will help you take that first step.

  1. Start small (Really small)
  • The biggest mistake beginners make? Trying to do too much, too soon.
  • Instead, keep it simple:
  • Start with 2-3 workouts per week just 15-20 minutes per day
  • Don’t worry about doing everything right, just move. Even walking in place while watching tv, or doing 10 squats in your kitchen counts. The key is to build the habit first- intensity can come later.

2. Use your body (it’s your best tool)

  • You don’t need equipment to get a great workout. Your body is more than enough.
  • Some beginner friendly body weight exercises:

Squats

Marching in place

Push ups on knees

3. Schedule it like an appointment

  • If it’s not in your calendar, it probably won’t happen.
  • Pick 2-3 specific times each week to work out and treat it like any other appointment. Set a reminder. Put on your workout clothes even if you’re not in the mood- half the battle is just showing up.

4. Create a space that makes you want to move

  • You don’t need a home gym- just a space that feels inviting
  • Clear a small corner of your room or living room
  • Put down a yoga mat or towel
  • Keep your water bottle, resistance bands or shoes nearby
  • Add music or lighting that energises you

The easier it is to start, the more likely you’ll do it.

5. Follow a plan so you’re not guessing

  • The quickest way to lose motivation? Not knowing what to do.
  • Instead of guessing your workouts every day, follow a simple plan that tells you:

What to do

For how long

How to track your progress
